Minds, Machines, and Morals: The Philosophy of AI

LYOSB39 (Available for third period: 16:00 - 17:00)

3rd TermHüseyin Kuyumcuoğlu

Can a machine think, understand, or feel? Should an algorithm decide who gets arrested, and who is responsible when a self-driving car crashes? This course introduces students to the philosophy of artificial intelligence through the questions today’s AI systems force upon us, from the Turing test and the Chinese Room thought experiment to algorithmic fairness, AI consciousness, and the moral status of machines. No prior philosophy knowledge is assumed: each session pairs a live AI question with a core philosophical tool, such as reconstructing arguments, testing thought experiments, and finding counterexamples. Students leave the class able to think rigorously about AI rather than just use it.
