Introduction to molecular cell biology: Cells and genomes, cell chemistry, biosynthesis. Core genetic mechanisms: DNA and chromosomes, DNA duplication, repair and recombination, RNA transcription, genetic expression control, protein degradation mechanisms. Methods used in molecular biology and genetics research: DNA, RNA and protein manipulation, imaging methods, special techniques. Cell structure: Cell membrane, organelles and protein distribution, vesicular transport, mitochondria and chloroplasts, cell structure, intercellular transmission, intracellular signaling, cell division and cycle, programmed cell death. From cells to tissues and organs: Intercellular links, fertilization and development of multicellular organisms. Disease biology and molecular medicine: Disease development mechanisms, cancer, genetic diseases, infections, Alzheimer's and degenerative diseases. Drug research and nanomedicine: What are drugs, how is drug research conducted, the use of nano-medical techniques in diagnosis and treatment. Laboratory studies: Genetic engineering methods: Gene production in bacteria, DNA purification and gene manipulation. Cell biology and biochemistry techniques: Introducing genes to cancer cells, tracking proteins inside cells, protein analysis. Molecular medicine and nano-medicine inventions at Sabancı University: New proteins that control cell reaction to stressors; gene gun that kills cancer cells; a novel drug that starves cancer cells.
