There is an invisible component to everything we have in our lives from textile to cosmetics and health: nanotechnologies. Many experts agree that nanotechnologies will be among the defining technologies of the 21st century. A nanometer is one-one millionth of a meter. One nanometer is about the thickness of a few atoms side by side. Matter has different behavior at nano-scale. Nanotechnologies are based on controlled and measurable modifications made at the atomic level. At the atomic level, the laws of quantum physics begin to apply and changes occur in surface effects, electromagnetic energy interaction, and molecular interaction. As a result, the development of nanotechnology requires imaging and measurement at the atomic level. Seeing and measuring atoms enables us to design the features that will develop, and bring innovation to everyday technologies. Research and development in nanotechnologies is beginning to have a major effect on our quality of life starting with health, and will continue to do so.
